As an ancient Chinese proverb says, “Failure is the mother of success”, failures in life are inevitable (Yes – it is true fortunately or unfortunately). Even if we did our best, there are occasions that we still did not succeed. How should we react in those situations?
First of all, we should remind ourselves that failures do happen and it is not the end of the world. Breathe and accept it as a fact. Then take the time to reflect on questions such as “How would I change if I could redo it?” and “Is there anything that I can prepare for next time?”. If there is preparation work to be done, then start as soon as possible. Last and most importantly, regain hope and positive energy to continue. Don’t forget that the goal is not far away from here. Keep up with your good work!

En recherche d’emploi (#10: Avant le succès)

Comme dit un proverbe chinois ancien « L’échec est la mère du succès », des échecs sont inévitables (oui – c’est vrai heureusement ou malheureusement) dans la vie. Même si on fait de notre mieux, il y a des occasions où on ne réussit pas. Comment agit-on dans ces situations ?
Tout d’abord, on doit se rappeler que parfois ça arrive et ce n’est pas la fin de monde. Respirer et accepter ce fait. Ensuite prendre du temps pour réfléchir avec des questions incluant « Qu’est-ce que je changerais si je pouvais le refaire ?» et « Y-a-t-il des choses que je peux préparer pour la prochaine fois ? ». S’il a des taches que vous pourriez faire, commencez le plus vite possible. Finalement, retrouver l’espoir et l’esprit positif pour une bonne continuation. N’oubliez pas le but n’est pas si loin. Encore du courage !

Besides searching for a new job in Paris, one of my main reasons moving here is to improve my French. On top of that, my level of French is an obstacle in my job search. However, I found conventional French courses in a classroom too expensive and boring for me. Instead, I prefer exploring other means that are more personalized and effective for me. Today, with the popularity and power of internet, there are lots of resources more economical and convenient.
To this end, I discovered some online courses in French on subjects that interest me as well as useful in my job search such as project management (Agile and Scrum). In this way, I can practise my French and improve my professional profile at the same time. For me, this is an alternative way of learning that is more natural and stimulating.

En recherche d’emploi (#9: Créer des synergies)
En plus de ma recherche d’emploi à Paris, un autre de mes buts principaux pour déménager ici est d’améliorer mon français. En même temps, le niveau de mon français est un obstacle à ma recherche d’emploi. Par contre, je trouve qu’un cours français classique est un peu trop cher et un peu ennuyeux pour moi. Je préfère chercher d’autres moyens qui peut-être plus personnalisés et plus efficaces pour moi. Avec la popularité et la puissance de l’internet, il y a beaucoup de ressources plus économiques et plus convenables aujourd’hui. Pour moi, j’ai trouvé les cours en français en ligne sur les sujets m’intéresse et utiles pour ma recherche d’emploi comme la gestion de projet (Agile et Scrum). Je peux pratiquer mon français et en même temps j’améliore mon profil professionnel. D’après moi, c’est une alternative d’apprentissage plus naturelle et plus stimulante.

One has to do his/her best to seek opportunities in order to progress on the path of job search. For example, I had a conversation with a headhunter last week and finally the job was not a good match for me. Before ending the call, I asked him if he had any advice for me and consequently, I got very good suggestions on my CV/resume as well as the range of renumeration expected.
At another time, I was at the Pompidou library in my neighborhood and noticed that there are many pamphlets there. I read some of them and signed up for a job search workshop provided by the government to the public for free.
I am convinced that there are many other opportunities out there if we reflect more and seek actively. Let us make the best out of the opportunities waiting ahead of us.

En recherche d’emploi (#8: Chercher l’occasion activement et profiter pour progresser)
Dans la recherche d’emploi, on fait de notre mieux pour trouver des occasions pour progresser. Par exemple, j’ai eu une conversation avec un chasseur de tête la semaine dernière et enfin le poste n’a pas correspondu à mes compétences. Avant la fin de notre rappel, j’ai demandé s’il y a des conseils pour moi et par conséquence, il m’a donné des très bonnes suggestions pour mon CV et la gamme de rémunération prévue.
Une autre fois, j’étais à la Bibliothèque Pompidou dans mon quartier et j’ai remarqué qu’il y a pas mal de publicité là-bas. J’en ai lu plusieurs et je me suis inscrit pour un atelier lié à la recherche d’emploi ouvert pour le public gratuitement.
Je suis convaincu qu’il y a beaucoup plus d’occasions si on réfléchit plus fortement et plus activement. Alors, profitez bien des occasions à venir.

During my job search in Paris, I have noticed that there are some differences between the French and Anglo-Saxon systems (from my experience in London and New York). For example, to answer the question ‘Please describe yourself’, one starts with his/her education and continues chronologically even if one has more than 30 years of work experience. On the other hand, in the Anglo-Saxon world in particular the U.S., one starts with the most recent work experience and continues achronologically. In a sense, it explains a bit the importance of education in the French culture.
Taking another example, it is absolutely essential to apply with an application letter (a CV/resume is not sufficient) in France. Last week I attended a job search workshop and the instructor advised us to apply with an application letter and a sheet containing a list of personal competence without a CV/resume. In the U.S and U.K., it is generally sufficient to apply with a CV (a letter of application is rarely required).
As we are not going to change the systems of a country overnight, we need to put aside our opinions (agree with it or not). It is better to accept the differences and do our best to adapt to different systems.

En recherche d’emploi (#7: Remarquer des différences)
Pendant ma recherche d’emploi à Paris, j’ai remarqué qu’il y a des différences entre les systèmes français et les systèmes Anglo-saxons (mes expériences à Londres et à New York). Par exemple, en France, pour la réponse à la question « présentez-vous vous-même », on commence avec la formation et l’éducation même si on a plus de 30 ans d’expérience et on continue chronologiquement. Alors que dans le monde Anglo-saxons surtout aux États-Unis, on débute par le travail le plus récent et on continue achronologiquement. D’un certain sens, ça explique un peu l’importance de l’éducation dans la culture française. De plus, en France, c’est absolument essentiel de postuler avec une lettre de motivation (un CV n’est pas suffisant). J’ai assisté à un atelier de la recherche d’emploi et le présentateur nous a conseillé de postuler avec une lettre de motivation avec une fiche de compétences sans CV. Aux États-Unis et au Royaume-Uni, normalement, un CV est suffisant (une lettre de motivation est rarement requise).
Comme si on ne peut pas changer les systèmes dans un pays rapidement, on doit laisser de côté nos opinions (d’accord ou contre). On doit accepter les différences et on fait de notre mieux pour nous adapter.

Last week I went to the police precinct in Paris to apply for a residence card after a 6-week wait for such an important appointment. I prepared a lot of paper work beforehand and brought them with me for the appointment. During the meeting, the officer in charge asked me for a photocopy of my tax record in France. Unfortunately, I only had the original copy with me but no photocopy was prepared as the document was not the on the list of documents required for the appointment. I asked him if there is a copy machine close-by. He pointed me to one in the hallway. I found the machine easily and it only accepts bills less than 20 Euros (not credit card). However, I only had a 20 Euro bill with me. I went back to the waiting room and asked the people there if anyone could kindly exchange the 20 Euro bill with me. Finally (by God’s grace) a young Asian lady gave me one Euro.
Then I put the Euro into the photocopier but it did not work. Out of other options and after 10 minutes, I returned to the office and explained my problem to the officer. Fortunately, he was a kind man. He made the photocopies for me for free. After all the “dramas”, my day finished well :>

La semaine dernière, j’étais à la préfecture de police à Paris pour demander un titre de séjour après une attente de six semaines pour ce rendez-vous important. J’ai préparé beaucoup de papiers et je les ai pris avec moi dans une serviette. Pendant le rendez-vous, le fonctionnaire en charge m’a demandé une photocopie de ma fiche d’impôt en France. Malheureusement, j’avais la fiche originale, mais pas une photocopie car en fait ce document n’est pas dans la liste de document requis. Je lui ai demandé s’il y a une photocopieuse proche. Il m’a dit qu’il y en a une juste dans le couloir. Je l’ai trouvée facilement et elle accepte seulement les billets jusqu’à 10 euros et pas la carte bleue. Par hasard, j’avais uniquement un billet de 20 euros avec moi. Je suis revenu dans la salle d’attente et j’ai demandé aux gens s’ils pouvaient changer de l’argent avec moi. Enfin (grâce a mon dieu) une jeune femme asiatique m’a donné un euro.
Puis j’ai mis un euro dans la photocopieuse, mais elle n’a pas fonctionné. Sans autres solutions et après 10 minutes, je suis revenu à la cabine et j’ai expliqué mon problème au fonctionnaire. Heureusement c’était un monsieur sympathique et il a fait des photocopies pour moi gratuitement. Maigre tous les incidents, ma journée s’est bien finie.

My current job search experience reminded me of my previous experience in New York a couple of decades ago. When I finished my 18-month post-graduate studies in New York, I started looking for my first job there. It was really difficult for a foreigner without prior working experience nor a strong personal network. By God’s grace and help of my friends, I finally managed to land my first job and progressed quite well thereafter. Today even though I have a lot of international experience in my field, I need to be humble and start from “square one” as if it was my first job in life (my life in France). I continue to stay positive and optimistic on this journey.

En recherche d’emploi (#6: L’humilité)
Mon expérience de la recherche d’emploi actuellement me rappelle mon expérience à New York il y a plusieurs décennies. Quand j’ai fini mes études à New York après 18 mois et j’ai commencé à chercher mon premier travail là-bas. C’était vraiment difficile pour un étranger sans expérience ni réseau très fort. Grâce à dieu et mes amis, j’ai finalement réussi et j’ai ensuite progressé pas mal jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Maintenant même si j’ai beaucoup d’expérience internationale dans mon domaine, je dois être humble et je recommence à zéro comme si c’était le premier poste de ma vie (en France). Je continue à rester positif et optimiste.

I received a (real) pineapple as a new year gift last week. I was at the open market in Bastille as a weekly habit to purchase fruits and vegetables. I bought 7 different kinds of fruit and vegetable for 7 Euros. When I paid for my purchase, the vendor gave me a fresh pineapple for free. I refused and explained to him that I did not know how to prepare it. He declined to accept my reason and demonstrate in front of a small crowd (6-8 other customers in the street) the way to prepare it. It was very funny and I almost “broke” my arms for carrying too much stuff home.

Un ananas : Un cadeau pour la bonne année ?
J’ai reçu un ananas (vrai) comme un cadeau pour la bonne année la semaine dernière. J’étais au marché ouvert à Bastille comme chaque semaine pour acheter des fruits et des légumes. Cette fois, j’ai acheté 7 genres de fruits et de légumes pour 7 euros. Quand j’ai payé pour mes achats, le vendeur m’a donné un ananas gratuitement. J’ai refusé l’ananas et je lui ai expliqué que je ne sais pas le préparer. Mais il n’a pas accepté mon excuse et il m’a montré devant une petite foule (7-8 clients dans la rue) le moyen de préparation. C’était très drôle et j’étais prêt à faire souffrir mes mains sous le poids des légumes et des fruits.

I attended a life coaching workshop about 18 months ago in London and the presenter suggested a daily exercise of gratitude. It is simply noting 3 things (preferably written on a notebook) that you are grateful for each morning. That helps transform the mood to be more positive.
I think we can apply the same principle in the case of job search. Thanks genuinely people who have helped you and be gentle to those who haven’t. Remember that no one has obligations to help you. After all, continue to develop your personal as well as professional network with gratitude and hard work.

En recherche d’emploi (5: La gratitude)
J’étais à l’atelier de life coaching il y a 18 mois à Londres et le présentateur nous a suggéré un exercice quotidien d’entraînement de la gratitude. Il suffit simplement de noter (préférablement dans un cahier) chaque matin trois choses pour lesquelles on est reconnaissant. Ça aide à rendre nos sentiments plus positifs.
Je pense qu’on peut utiliser le même principe pour un projet de recherche de travail. Remerciez gentiment les gens qui vous donnent un coup de main et soyez calme avec les autres qui ne font rien. N’oubliez pas que personne n’est obligé de vous aider. Après tout, continuez de développer votre réseau personnel et professionnel avec de la gratitude et un grand travail.

Perseverance and patience are much needed during the job search. It is better to prepare oneself for a period longer and perhaps more unstable than expected. Expect good times as well as disappointment. Above all, stay positive and optimistic. Take each occasion as an opportunity to learn something regardless of the results.

Il faut avoir de la persévérance et de la patience pendant la recherche d’emploi. C’est mieux de se préparer pour une période peut-être plus longue et plus incertaine qu’on exige normalement. Attendez-vous à des bons moments et aussi des déceptions. Reflétez vos priorités de la vie et votre image vous-même. En tout cas, restez positif et optimiste. Chaque occasion est une opportunité pour apprendre quelque chose malgré les résultats positifs ou négatifs. Apprenez et progressez!!!

I have received advice from a few friends that had similar experience like me searching for a new job after a long period of employment. One common point is to establish a structure in terms of schedule during the period of job search. Perhaps start a few personal projects (including job search). For instance, friend of mine obtained a Yoga instructor qualification while another one started learning the piano. The structure (of time) acts as a psychological “safety net” to keep you busy and engaged in some interesting projects (perhaps you did not have time to do before).

Like me for example, in the morning, I carry out job search related tasks and/or take online French lessons. In the afternoon, I go for lunch/coffee with friends, visit museum/cinema or run my errands. In the evening, I conduct life coaching sessions with my clients.

En recherche d’emploi (3: L’organisation du temps)
J’ai reçu des conseils de plusieurs amis qui ont des expériences similaires en recherche d’emploi après une longue période de travail. Un point commun entre eux est l’organisation du temps pendant la recherche. En plus peut-être plusieurs projets personnels commencent (inclus la recherche d’emploi). Par exemple, un ami à moi obtenait un diplôme de yoga pendant qu’un autre apprenait le piano. L’organisation du temps fonctionne comme une “sécurité” psychologique pour vous occuper et vous engager dans les projets intéressants (que peut-être vous n’avez pas le temps de faire).

Comme moi par exemple, le matin, je fais des tâches liées à la recherche d’emploi et j’apprends le français en ligne. Après midi, je prends le déjeuner/café avec mes amis ou fais des courses ou vais au musée/cinéma. Le soir, je donne des séances de life coaching à mes clients.
