Four weeks ago, I realized that the door of a top cabinet close to the ceiling in my restroom could not be opened. I forced it a little bit and the paint of the ceiling fell off as a result. First of all, I thought it was a problem with the cabinet door and thus tried many different ways to fix it but in vain. Running out of options, I sent some photos showing the problem to the contractor who had placed the cabinet eighteen months ago. He immediately pointed out to me that it was probably due to a leak from the apartment above. Subsequently, I went to see my neighbor and sure enough he confirmed that there was a leak from his boiler.
In retrospect, I thought of two interesting points. First, it is important for us to seek advice and opinions from others before making a decision even though at the end we are the one who is responsible. Secondly, look out for blind spots in our judgement. In my case, I reckon I was subconsciously suppressing the possibility of a leak because a problem with a cabinet door was much easier to solve than a water leak. If I had been objective enough to see it, I would have identified this problem and address it accordingly much earlier.

Mon Blog : Un angle mort de mon jugement
Il y a quatre semaines, je ne pouvais pas ouvrir la porte du placard situé en haut, au niveau du plafond de ma salle de bains. Et puis, je l’ai forcé un peu et par conséquent, la peinture du plafond s’est déformée. Tout d’abord, j’ai pensé que soit il y avait un problème avec la porte ; soit la cause en était l’humidité là-haut. J’avais beau ajuster la porte avec des moyens différents, la porte restait toujours bloquée. Finalement, j’ai envoyé des photos afin de montrer la situation à un artisan. Après plusieurs échanges de textos et photos, il m’a suggéré que c’était probablement à cause d’une fuite de mon voisin. Ensuite, j’ai vérifié avec mon voisin dans l’appartement dessus et, en effet, il y avait une fuite du ballon d’eau chaude chez-lui.
Rétrospectivement après réflexion, j’ai noté deux points intéressants. En premier lieu, l’importance de demander les opinions des autres et de ne pas prendre des décisions sous réserve de consultation, bien que ce soit vous qui décidiez finalement. Deuxièmement, les « angles morts » de nos cerveaux. Dans ce cas, je trouve que subconsciemment j’ai probablement voulu éviter la possibilité d’une fuite d’eau puisque ce serait beaucoup plus grave qu’un petit problème d’une porte de placard. Cette « préférence » malheureusement a causé un préjudice dans ma tête de ne pas chercher pas dans cette direction. Certainement, j’aurais pu trouver la cause plus vite si j’avais été plus objectif.
